Health and Safety: Government Review

The Government is currently conducting a review of health and safety laws and practice.

Lord Young of Graffham, who was a cabinet minister in Margaret Thatcher’s Government, has been appointed as Adviser to David Cameron and is overseeing a Whitehall-wide review of the operation of health and safety laws and the growth of the ‘compensation culture’.

Commenting on the review, the Prime Minister said, “The rise of the compensation culture over the last ten years is a real concern, as is the way health and safety rules are sometimes applied.

“We need a sensible new approach that makes clear these laws are intended to protect people, not overwhelm businesses with red tape.”

Lord Young’s report on how best this can be achieved will be published shortly. Whilst health and safety regulations governing potentially dangerous workplaces are unlikely to be affected, those covering regular offices may be relaxed.
