Revenue Data Loss - Points to Note

With the loss of data by HM Revenue and Customs making the headlines, it is worth pointing out two things which aren’t being talked about.

Firstly,  the data stolen are those of recent claimants for child benefit and their families. The data for families with no children under 19 are unlikely to have been lost.

Secondly, as well as checking bank accounts, you should keep an eye on whether anyone is applying for credit in your name. You can do this by making use of a service such as Experian. There is a small charge for this, but you may think it is worth it for the peace of mind. This is also advisable if you find that you are refused credit you would expect to get (which may be an indication that there are other credit applications being made with your details) or if you find you get letters relating to credit applications you have not made.
