Change of Use Alterations: Changes to Permitted Development Rights

In a bid to promote growth in British towns and centres, the government have opted to allow office space to be altered without planning permission – this includes being able to change office space into residential accommodation.

It’s a controversial plan but it has been welcomed by many – with property companies agreeing that it could boost the national economy and see an increase in businesses returning to the high street.

As well as being able to alter the use of office space – see The Planning Portal for more information – landlords will be able to buy up unused offices to convert into residential property for the rental market. Many landlords are facing increased demand for affordable housing, and the move is seen as a bid to address this and provide a level of housing which more people believe is in their price range.
